Comments

The "MD" stands for "Multi-Dimensional”, a reference to the guitar's ability to achieve a vast range of tones, specifically inspired by a Stratocaster Carlos Santana used on a Smokey Robinson album. It was designed as an evolution of the Santana I, II, and III models, incorporating classic features like the "Wide Fat" neck while introducing modern electronic enhancements. Unlike previous models, the volume knob was moved closer to the bridge pickup to allow Carlos (and other players) to perform volume swells and adjustments more easily while playing. It features unique abalone purfling (inlay strips) on the top between the pickups, a hallmark of high-end Santana models. The bird inlays on these models are typically "outlined" rather than solid. One of its standout features is a mini-toggle switch that activates the MVC (Mastering Voice Control) circuit. This provides an early '60s-style single-coil clarity and brightness, allowing the humbuckers to mimic a thinner, more vintage sound. The Santana MD was a relatively short-lived core model, produced primarily between 2008 and 2009.
